Gold Mining in Washington State-Yesterday and Today is divided into three sections and includes over 100 photographs, illustrations, and maps. It presents information that has never before been in print and is unavailable anywhere else.
SECTION 1: THE LURE OF GOLD covers the first discoveries of gold in Washington State and encounters with Native Americans.
SECTION 2: HARDROCK MINING illustrates and explains the numerous methods used in the mining and milling of gold ore. Major mines are featured.
SECTION 3: PLACER MINING covers early routes of travel; equipment used in both commercial and recreational mining; properties of gold; and other interesting facets of placer mining.
The author, Ken Martin, has a B.A. and M.A. from Seattle Pacific University. He has spent 20 years in prospecting, mostly in Eastern Washington. Two seasons were spent on the Forty Mile River in Alaska. He has done extensive research on the subject and interviewed those "Old Timers" who mined gold.
